Where once Japanese developers made games for the massive home market, and if they found success overseas it was a bonus, they are now actively courting the global market, and – aside from a few notable exceptions – not doing all that well.
This has meant that Japanese publishers and developers have increasingly been forced to look beyond their borders, to make games with a wider audience in mind. Compounding things, Japan has been in a recession for more than 20 years, which has resulted in the steady decline of what was once one of the biggest markets for games in the world.
